Born in Ukraine, Alex was raised under the communist rule of the USSR. As a teenager, Alex risked severe legal punishment. What was his crime? Listening to American music.
Alex was drafted into the Soviet Army at age 19 and served 2+ years in a Special Force Unit guarding Nuclear missiles (Western Ukraine). By the time he was discharged, he was a commander of his platoon. When the chance came to move to America and start a new life, Alex jumped at the chance.
New Opportunities
Coming to America opened opportunities for Alex that would have been impossible under communist rule. His career in technology led to him opening his own custom software development company in 2005. With the twenty-year anniversary coming soon, Alex had a chance to visit Taylor University to speak with students and talk about socialism vs. capitalism and why capitalism always wins.
While many might have an opinion on the subject, Alex has firsthand experience living under both communism and capitalism. Alex shared his personal memories about what it was really like to live in the USSR and serve in the Soviet Army.
The students were fascinated to hear his stories, and Alex spent a long time answering the many questions that his memories evoked in his hearers such as:
“Tell us more about life in USSR?”
“Why has Socialism never worked? “
“What you were feeling when you came to the US for the first time?”
“How to become a successful businessman?”
Ultimately, Alex’s message was a simple one.
The US is a best country in the world, and we need to do everything in our power to keep it this way.
