A team member in the United States signed into a video chat with a developer in Ukraine. They needed to discuss some aspects of an ongoing project.

As they spoke, bomb sirens began to wail their warning. To the American’s surprise, the Ukrainian developer continued to talk.

“Don’t you need to go to safety? We can do this later. Please go find shelter.” The American urged.

“No. I don’t get good internet connection in the bomb shelter. Let’s continue.”

Making a Choice

Many people cannot imagine facing a bombing with such calmness. Yet, for many Swan team members, the sound of sirens and war has become the background “music” of their life.

Rather than cowering in fear, they choose to continue to work and create the high-quality software that has made Swan such a strong company.

Although Swan provided opportunities and funding for all our Ukrainian developers to move to a safer place, many have chosen to remain where they are. They balance work with setting up defenses, volunteering, or transporting others to safety.

When the bomb sirens begin, some people rush to safety carrying their children, pets, or a few cherished possessions that might be all that is left when the bombing ends.

Others choose not to flee to a shelter because they don’t believe they will be in danger or because physical limitations make getting to one impossible.

Some live in underground locations full time without the most basic of amenities to try to keep their family safe.

Strength and Endurance

No matter which option they choose, living life in a war zone is stressful, disrupting, and countless other traumatic things. Yet, our team members continue to work and live.

For us in America, we pray for our team members, offer whatever support and donations we can, and continue to carry on business as usual. Our CEO put it best in this article from the Indianapolis Business Journal when he talked about Swan carrying on business as usual, “This is our way to fight with Russian hordes and win.”
